THE PLACE - THE WORK - THE PEOPLE

The Edinburgh Peace and Justice Centre has worked since 1980 to raise awareness of the complex causes of war and offer an alternative vision of ways to create peace through nonviolence, conflict resolution, human rights, alternatives to war, and environmental resoponsibility. We network with numerous groups and campaigne for nuclear disarmament and an end to the ongoing wars. The Centre offers a variety of resources to groups and individuals who share these values.

The meeting and exhibition space is available to rent. Exhibitions and information on a wide variety of campaigns are available to the public. There is a library of issue based publications and films for browsing or borrowing, white poppies, stickers and badges and our own and other newsletter available. Groups and individuals can Register as Centre Users to use the space for meetings, have a mailbox or use any of our resources.

WORK IN SCOTLAND AND THE WORLD
The Peace and Justice Centre works to keep peace and justice high on the agenda within the Scottish Parliament and has organised events such as the launch of the book Trident and International Law there. The Centre is active in Scotland's for Peace and is the home of the Scottish branch of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. It publishes Peace & Justice News, a monthly periodical of news and views, as well as fact sheets on a wide range of peace and justice topics.

Internships, volunteer and work placement plans are geared to the strengths and interests of the individual and matched to the needs of the Centre which include: writing and editing the newsletter, website and calendar, networking with groups and individuals, providing information to visitors, answering emails and phone enquiries, updating subscriber and membership lists, maintaining and developing information on campaigns and activities including our library of books, periodicals and films; researching and producing fact sheets, fundraising, committee work, campaigning, and much more.

VOLUNTEERS
The only requirement is a commitment to our values and a desire to work for peace and justice. Basic computer literacy is important for many jobs, though not all. A wide variety of skills are needed in carrying out our work. Maybe you can offer something creative like cartooning, singing, designing exhibitions, or writing poetry for our newsletter; maybe you can build shelves or fix the lights or coach Arabic; or maybe you'd prefer just to help keep the place clean and tidy.

INTERNS
The Centre offers internships, and can guarantee an interesting placement with good opportunities to develop an understanding of peace and justice theory and practice, but cannot at present offer funding. Interns are involved in campaigning and networking plus public office administration, along with a package of tasks drawn from the list you will find at the end of this page. We work to the strengths of our interns and volunteers, according to the expressed needs of the community of which we are part.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or intern or doing a work placement please call or drop in to the Centre for more information!
