The Edinburgh Peace and Justice Resource Centre welcomes the forming of a new and influential group of former UK Government ministers and senior military officers to work towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons. The lead has been taken by Des Browne, himself a recent Minister of Defence, and includes the former Foreign Secretaries Margaret Beckett and Malcolm Rifkind, as well as less surprising recruits like Shirley Williams.
The British Government has deliberately postponed the signing of the contract to design the next generation of Trident missiles until after the 2010 Review of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) next April.
Only in June we received a formal letter from the Ministry of Defence re-iterating the government's view that Trident has to be updated in case, in 20-40 years time, an unspecified country should come to hate us. Only last month we replied that no recent Minister had been able to find a single strategic problem enumerated in Defence White Papers that was solved by Britain's possession of a nuclear deterrent.
Be that as it may, the British Government approaches the 2010 Review of the NPT
TRIDENT PLOUGHSHARES BLOCKADE AT ALDERMASTON ON 15TH JUNE 2009
It was a glorious morning as 5 separate groups made their way towards Aldermaston. At 6.30a.m. the Muriel Lesters arrived at North Gate to find it had not been opened yet for the park and ride coaches so they further locked it with their own chains and some super-glue and arranged themselves as comfortably as possible in their lock-ons and hung their peace banners.
