We need peace in Sudan, Edinburgh drumming event

The Peace & Justice Centre organised this event as part of 'We need peace in Sudan' - see sudan365.org - on the 9th January. This is the fifth anniversary of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement for Sudan, which signaled the end of the civil war. Millions were killed. Millions were displaced. Millions suffered dire human rights abuses.

Take action on Sudan: write to your MP

Urgent action must be taken now by the international community to protect civilians during this turbulent period in Sudan. Over the next twelve months, there is a real opportunity to help the people of Sudan chart a peaceful and more prosperous future in which basic human rights are guaranteed and upheld. However, without adequate preparation, the upcoming national elections and referendum could re-ignite conflict between the north and the south. The international community should use its influence to press the parties to resolve outstanding issues and prevent a return to all-out conflict.

WE NEED PEACE IN SUDAN

The 9th January 2010 will mark the 5th anniversary of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended its 22-year civil war. This date will also mark the 1-year countdown until a referendum in which the South will vote on whether to become independent from the North.

On this day, in Edinburgh, join the drummers and call on the British government and international community to TAKE URGENT ACTION TO PROTECT THE PEACE IN SUDAN!
